Welcome !

Welcome to this page dedicated to the NAM -Neural Amp Modeler- system from Steven Atkinson (https://www.neuralampmodeler.com) . You will find demos, presets, resources and advices for the models that I capture and share on ToneHunt ( https://tonehunt.org/ ) and also directly here on this page. I will add usage recommendations for the models I am creating and sharing, as well as some details on the captured amps and systems.

Overdriven.fr license terms for NAM models

Free models or free model collections published on ToneHunt and on overdriven.fr are available for end-users under the following licence : « The user may download and load the data file into software, and utilize or publish the outputs from said software resulting from use of the aforementioned data file without royalty or restriction. The user may not upload, or otherwise republish or distribute the data file without express permission from the author of the aforementioned data file. ».

These collections may include sample IR files (Impulse Responses), taken from overdriven.fr free collections : these are exclusively and fully owned by Overdriven.fr / David A. and governed by the Terms of Use available on the About page | Use of overdriven.fr free impulse responses (https://overdriven.fr/overdriven/index.php/about/). These licensing terms provide similar rights and restrictions to the models license above. These NAM model collections do not embed any third party IRs or cab simulation systems.

Capture and testing

All the models are captured from real analog gear : amps, cabs, distorsion or overdrive pedals.… I do not capture or publish models from plugins or other modeler units.

The analog gear used is tested and carefully re-amped with a consistent procedure. Captured models are tested mainly under Logic Pro X with the standard NAM plugin and Two-Notes Genome CODEX, both in mix and standalone guitar tone context.

The models are usually calibrated for an incoming signal level of -12 dB (with -10 dB peaks). As NAM models are highly accurate, using this input signal range will bring you close to the original gain level and original tone. If your signal is hotter, consider lowering your input gain in the NAM plugin (or raising it if your signal is colder).

Adjust the plugin input level to match your desired gain level

You can do the same on the CODEX blocks of Genome if you use this plugin, which also provides a very convenient overall input level for this :

The output volume of your plugin is also key in the tone you will get from the NAM models : the volume of different models may slightly differ, as the fundamental tone characteristics of the models may be different : more or less scooped tone, more or less mids, more or less bass, etc…  You can adjust the volume directly in the plugin for the NAM plugin -or try using the normalize option-, the CODEX block output volume if you use CODEX or -similarly to the input settings- the overall Genome plugin output can also be used for this adjustment (especially interesting if you use a dedicated IR loader plugin following the Genome plugin) :

Model names use the following convention :

<GEAR_NAME>-AP-X or SP-X-<Model specific suffix> :

  • <GEAR_NAME> provides the gear reference
  • AP (Amplifier Profile) : amplifier only or boost/OD pedal plus amplifier profile -need an IR-, or SP (Studio Profile) for a complete rig capture (boost/OD, amp and cab/microphone) for a complete model -does not need an IR-.
  • <Model specific suffix> : a memo usually describing the channel, the boost or OD if such a pedal was embedded in the capture.

NAM Models

ODN PB models

The ODN PB models are based on a tube preamp inspired by a Powerball amplifier and associated with different power amps and boosts.

ODN PB 6L6 – Pack-1

This pack contains captures of the 1st channel of the preamp (crunch), routed to the 6L6 power amp section of a 100 Watts guitar amp (using 4x 6L6 GC power tubes). The gain is set to the maximum, using the 2 levels of gain settings of the preamp : low-gain and high-gain. This pack contains unboosted raw profiles that you can use with your own overdrives and models directly captured with overdrive pedals (that you can still re-boost if needed). This pack will bring you mid-gain to high-gain tone.

Basically, one tone setting was used on the preamp and all the models in this collection are captured using this unique tone setting. The tone differences are coming from the overdrives associations and from 3 different depth settings used :

ModelsPower amp settings
ODN-PB-AP-1 and AP-2Medium DEPTH setting, more clarity and bite
ODN-PB-AP-3 and AP-4DEPTH increased, more bass presence, still balanced tone but slightly darker
ODN-PB-AP-5 and AP-6Higher DEPTH setting, more scooped tone, darker and will need volume output increase

I would suggest to start by testing AP-1X and AP-2X models. Once you get familiar with the tone characteristics, you can jump and pick models in AP-3, 4, 5 and 6 and compare if they fit better your tone balance expectations.

The following list depicts the gain modes used in the models :

  • AP-1X, AP-3X, AP-5X : high-gain
  • AP-2X, AP-4X, AP-6X : low-gain

The following table presents the overdrives used in the models :

ModelOverdrive

1-6 A
Raw tone, no overdrive
1-6 BInspired by a pedal providing a precise drive
1-6 CInspired by a tube overdrive (1x 12AX7)
1-6 D and 1-6 EInspired by a high headroom and parametric EQ overdrive
1-6 FInspired by an overdrive with gritty and textured tones
1-6 GInspired by a TS-7 style overdrive, dark with strong bass section
1-6 HInspired by a TS-10 style overdrive, balanced tone
1-6 IInspired by a tube overdrive, with higher drive setting

A few advices for this collection : you may only use a subset of these models and apply your own tweaks to the models, using the NAM player tone stack controls, the CODEX tone stack(s) controls and eventually the CODEX eq and enhancer, and/or using additional EQ plugins. The three different tone balances (DEPTH setting) can be used as reference points for your own tweaking as they represent a real 6L6 power-amp behavior. These models reamp files were normalized with a conservative value of -5 dB : you may need to boost the output of the plugins by +2 dB to +4 dB.

These models were tested in E-standard, drop D and drop C with active pickups (EMG 81, Fishman Fluence Modern and Fishman Willie Adler pickups) : depending on your tuning / pickups / IR association and your taste, you may want to increase the NAM plugin input gain and/or to re-boost the models by using a real or a plugin overdrive in front of your NAM plugin in order to get more gain.
