July 2020, 5 : a new free guitar cabinet impulse responses collection is available. IRs were created with a German 112 cab loaded with a Celestion® A-Type speaker.
This one seems to be the V-Type American cousin : these two speakers seem to share the same construction base and deliver a very similar sound when you compare the 50 Hz to 1 kHz area.
One is vintage and clear (the V-Type), the second is modern and dark (the A-Type). Check the EQ screen shot below : from 100 to 1 KHz it seems that they share the same speaker base…. The A-Type has a sharper frequency drop at 5 Khz compared to the V-Type, which participates in its darker sound and slightly different tonal balance, which is more rounded and less aggressive . I find it pretty interesting and discovered that it is nice to go the opposite way to the one you follow with bright speakers : instead of taming highs and harshness, start with a darker speaker such as this one and raise the treble/gain/aggression to taste. Very cool IMHO for headphone practice : less hearing fatigue, much more relaxing, and longer guitar play time. It can give a thick tone (not so obvious from the first samples below), which is great for single note body and resonance….
Don’t cut the low-end too much for dynamic mics (go for 60-75Hz for example). For the ribbon mics IRs, you can go higher. The speaker has a strong low and low-mid presence : the 100-400 Hz area is quite important, so if you experience boomy/muddy sound or a masking effect with too much bass, lower this band (for example WOS 120 Hz : -1 to -4 dB, 360 HZ -1 to -4 dB, depending on your amp voicing and settings, of course). The speaker has an overall dark presence (compared to other speakers) but pay attention as on-axis positions (P00-P09) still deliver a lot of treble.
