Terms and conditions

Before proceeding with download, please consult the terms of use, and more specifically the “impulse response” section : https://overdriven.fr/overdriven/index.php/fr/about/.

These impulse response files (IRs) are free and as mentioned in the Terms of Use, no warranty of any kind is provided with these files (issues, sound problems, inability to use them, sound quality, damages of any kind…).

Cab and Mics

The cab used is a German front-loaded and ported 1*12 loaded with a Celestion® A-Type (8 ohms, 50 Watts). This association delivers a lot of punch and a great tone for rock, cleans,… and metal of course !

This collection is the second one in a new recording setup using a KT88 power section together with the previously used tube microphone preamp.  See the V-Type E112 IR Page for informations about this setup : https://overdriven.fr/overdriven/index.php/german-112-celestion-v-type-home-studio-edition-free-guitar-cab-impulse-responses-download/

A-Type rear plate

A word on the speaker

The A-Type has a sharper frequency drop at 5 Khz compared to the V-Type, which participates in its darker sound and slightly different tonal balance, which is more rounded and less aggressive than its V-Type cousin. I find it pretty interesting and discovered that it is nice to go the opposite way to the one you follow with bright speakers : instead of taming highs and harshness, starting with a darker speaker such as this one and raise the treble/gain/aggression to taste is interesting and gives great results. Very cool -IMHO- for headphone practice : less hearing fatigue, much more relaxing, longer guitar play time. The A-Type gives a very thick tone, which is great for single note body and resonance, single notes can be quite “full” with this speaker….
Dont cut the low-end too much for dynamic mics (go for 60-75Hz for example) , excepted for ribbon mics IRS where you could go higher. The speaker has a strong low and low-mids presence : the 100-400 Hz area is quite high, so if you experience boomy/muddy sound or a masking effect with too much bass, lower this band (for example under WOS: 120 Hz -1 to -4 dB, 360 HZ -1 to -4 dB, depending on your amp voicing and settings, of course). The speaker has an overall dark presence (compared to other speakers) but pay attention as on-axis positions (P00-P09) still deliver a lot of treble.

Samples

The following samples were recorded with the following equipment :

  • SD AHB1 or Nazgul pickups (E Standard / Drop C#)
  • Boss chorus for clean samples
  • Maxon OD9
  • Randall Thrasher 50
  • Torpedo Reload
  • Logic Pro X , Torpedo wall of sound with the 88K IRs.

I reused here the same tracks that the V-Type samples. Additional samples will be posted to better reflect the tone of the A-Type with ad’hoc amp settings.

IR Files

IRs are provided in 44,1 KHZ format, each mic in a subfolder. 76 IR files in this version. 3 voicing available for the DYN-GB-1 microphone. -RF when recorded with a reflexion filter. -2 when a 2nd take was recorded to avoid preamp tube clipping. Distances of 100 or 140 are likely to contain more room reverberation.

A few notes

  • The proximity effect of microphones was leveraged, without an aggressive low-cut : adjust HPF to your taste. For example, the sound gets more balanced with these IRs with 120 Hz -1 or -2 dB, 360 Hz -1 or -2 dB
  • The KT88 power amp used for IR capture tend to scoop a little bit the 600/800 HZ area : if you raise it by 1 to 2 DB, you may get closer to the actual sound of this speaker (ie under WOS 800 HZ +1 DB)
  • the IRs are recorded with a tube preamp
  • inner cap edge and cap edge (p09 – p10 – 12) present the most balanced tone for dynamic and condenser mics
  • use distance of 140 and more for the ribbon mics IRs to limit the huge bass level or use aggressive EQ values and low cut
