CAB and mics

The guitar cabinet on which this collection is based on is a German front-loaded and ported 1*12 cabinet, loaded with a Celestion™ Century Vintage speaker (8 ohms). 

This speaker is pretty difficult to find these days : I was able to buy this one brand-new a few years ago -thanks to a Portuguese reseller- but never had time to set it up and to capture it. The Century Vintage was* one of the early models in the « Neo » series from Celestion : very lightweight and using Neodymium magnets.

From a tone perspective, the Century Vintage is often presented as a pleasant and solid alternative to the Vintage 30 : it is very articulate and relatively clear and crisp, it provides a more precise bass register and does not have the harshness of the V30. IMHO, it is a very interesting speaker, able to compliment all types of amplifiers and gain ranges : clean, overdriven tone, crunch, mid-gain and high-gain… Blues or country, rock to metal rhythm, I think it may pleasantly surprise players in many genres… 

This free collection is based on the « DE-112 » front-loaded and ported cab : future collections will provide 2×12 configurations.

• The preamp used is the “solid state preamp 2”
• Capture based on an Engl™ 1*12 front-loaded cabinet, with one Century Vintage™ speaker, 8 ohms
• 1 condenser mic, 2 dynamic mics, 1 ribbon mic, 40 IR files in WAV format, downsampled to 44,1 kHz
• Using updated publication format : 24 bits / 100 ms
• 4 microphones :
  • CND-AU-1 : balanced tone
  • DYN-57 : classical 57 tone, can be relatively bright. -UA610 files are captured with an UA 610 preamp (lite bass increase)
  • DYN-421 : 421 tone, slightly scooped, working well with this speaker. -UA610 files are captured with an UA 610 preamp (lite bass increase)
  • RBN-160 : classic ribbon tone, setup for clarity in this collection. “-LC” files use a low-cut filter, engaged at capture time, for greater clarity and articulation.

Samples

A few samples to showcase the type of tone that can be achieved, using a Line6 Helix Native Carillon amp with an Helix Native reverb.
