CAB and mics
The guitar cabinet on which this collection is based on is a Zilla® Fatboy 2×12 cabinet loaded with a WGS® VET30 speaker and an Eminence® Governor speaker. This collection contains the VET30 IRs.
The Zilla® Fatboy is a very good and balanced 2*12 custom cab, made to order by Zilla Cabs : please check ZillaCabs website at https://www.zillacabs.com for the complete range of available cabs.
The promise of the VET30 is to provide a V30 tone without the harshness …. And it does deliver exactly this : a typical V30 tone without the spike and the harshness in the upper mids…. It will also sound a little bit less open / a bit darker than classical V30 with certain microphones and positions. The specific one I used also has a rather subdued or attenuated low-end which provides a lot of clarity but some of us could find that it lacks a little bit of presence in that part of the spectrum, making it sound a little flat or dull : see the suggested EQ adjustments a little down further this page….
This collection comes with 2 sets of microphones :
- standard microphones captures
- modeled microphones captures, using an Universal Audio Sphere LX microphone
The modeled microphones captures sound a little bit darker by default : I suggest to gently bump the 2.5 kHz area by 1 to 2 db to get more air and liveliness in this case, depending on the voicing of your gear (pickup/overdrives/amps).
The standard microphones provide more clarity and articulation, without the harshness. They will work nicely in a mix by default but you may miss a little bit of push in the low register : I suggest to bump a little the 100-120 hz area by 2 or 3 db, again depending on the voicing of your gear and your context.
These two suggestions are summarized in the screenshot below :

Check also the red circle on the screenshot : it shows the drop between 5K and 6K : this removes most of the typical V30 harshness…
The free collection contains an SP-1-PREVIEW directory and provides samples positions of mics available in the sponsored collection.
